National Ambulance Service (NAS) since its inception in 2004 has sworn in its first ever Governing Board at the Ministry of Health Conference room in Accra last Tuesday. The thirteen board members are Nana Wiafe Ababio, President’s Nominee, CEO, NAS Prof. Ahmed Nuhu Zakariah, SAEMT Gaani Michael Dimongso EMTAG President NAS, Mr. Ramadan Abubakar, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Hon. Solomon Namliit Boar, Minister’s Nominee and Dr. Kwaku Nyame, College of Physicians and Surgeons.

The rest are Dr. Eric Nsiah-Boateng, Ministry of Health, Dr. Marion Okoh-Owusu, Minster’s Nominee, Col. Gordon Alexis Obiri Appiah, Ghana Armed Forces, ACP / Dr. Samuel Kwame Ofori, Ghana Police Service, Mr. Solomon Gayoni Gbolo, Ghana Red Cross Society, Mr. Richard Fedieley. Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and Madam Fanny Simpson, Ghana National Fire Service.

In a speech by the Minister for Health, Hon Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, who sworn the Board members in, congratulated them on their new appointment on behalf of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo and noted that being the First Governing Board, a lot will be expected of them. He further noted that, a lot has been achieved by the Management and staff of the NAS, led by its CEO, Prof. Ahmed Nuhu Zakariah and expects that the Board would help to maintain and improve upon the gains and successes achieved so far.

Hon. Kwaku Agyeman-Manu expressed his hope that, the Board would provide support to the Management of NAS. He said, “It is my fervent hope that the Board would provide all the necessary support to the Management of NAS to work together efficiently and effectively to improve the emergency care services in the country”. Ending his speech, he expressed confidence in the composition of the Board. He said “It is obvious from the composition of the Board, that members have diverse backgrounds with the requisite expertise to support in the operations and growth of the NAS”.

In an acceptance speech read on behalf of the members by the Chairman of the Board, Nana Wiafe Ababio accepted and expressed their appreciation to their appointments as Board Chairman and members of the very first Governing Board of NAS. He went further to thank the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo and the Hon. Minister for Health for the confidence reposed in them as members to serve on the first Governing Board of the NAS.

He said, “On behalf of my colleagues members of the NAS Governing Board, I wish to express our appreciation to the President of the Republic, and the Honorable Minister for Health for the honor done us”. The Chairman assured the President that, they are not going to disappoint him. He stated, “I would like to give you an assurance that the Board, under my Chairmanship, is not going to micromanage the NAS, but rather going to play its role as a Governing Board and provide all the support that would be needed to improve the emergency response system for Ghana”.

Nana Wiafe Ababio further pleaded the support of the Hon. Minister to solve the challenges facing the NAS. He said, “I hope the Honorable Minister would always be available and ready to support us as a Board, to solve the countless challenges facing our noble institution”. He also assured all, that the Board would provide its needed support to the Management of NAS, and together the Emergency Medical Service System in Ghana would improve to meet the emergency response needs of all Ghanaians and people living in Ghana.
