The Ashanti Regional Administration of the National Ambulance Service (NAS), under the leadership of DCAEMT Sommik Duut Miilon, has successfully organized an in-service training program aimed at enhancing the clinical skills of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) across the region.
The training, held on April 16, 2026, focused on intravenous (IV) access and fluid resuscitation—key life-saving interventions in pre-hospital emergency care. A total of 24 EMTs drawn from various ambulance stations within the region participated in the exercise.
The session was led by Paramedic Wonder K. Kponor, who guided participants through both theoretical and practical components of the training. In attendance were the Regional Administrative Manager and his deputy, DCAEMT Martin Alalinga.
Participants were taken through the various types of intravenous fluids, their appropriate indications, and correct administration techniques. The training also covered the different types and sizes of cannulas, with emphasis on proper selection and usage depending on patient condition.
A major highlight of the program was the practical session, where EMTs had the opportunity to practice IV access techniques. In a hands-on approach, participants practiced on themselves under supervision.
This training serves as a pilot initiative, and its success is expected to pave the way for a wider rollout across the region.
Management commends the participants for their dedication and encourages all EMTs to continually upgrade their skills in line with best practices in emergency medicine.
