A delegation from the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Management of the National Ambulance Service (NAS), has taken custody of 30 ambulances that had been left idle at the Ghana Air Force Base at Burma Camp in Accra.
The development follows a legal mandate granted by the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, which authorized the Ministry of Health to assess the abandoned ambulances for potential use.
The team, led by the Chief Executive Officer of NAS, Dr. George Kojo Owusu, and supported by engineers from the State Transport Company (STC), met with the top hierarchy of the Ghana Air Force to facilitate the handover process.
Keys to the ambulances were formally handed over to Dr. Owusu and the Legal Advisor to the Minister of Health, Abubakar Muteeb, Esq., who led the Ministry’s delegation. The presentation was conducted by Col. B. B. Pantoh of the Ghana Armed Forces, marking the official transfer of responsibility.
Engineers from STC are expected to assess the condition of the ambulances to determine their roadworthiness and overall fitness for operational use.
The retrieval of the vehicles is anticipated to boost the operational capacity of the National Ambulance Service as it continues to enhance emergency medical response across the country. Officials are optimistic that, following the necessary technical evaluations and refurbishments, the ambulances will soon be deployed to support healthcare delivery nationwide
