NAS MANAGEMENT CALLS ON KORLE-BU TEACHING HOSPITAL TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNICATION AND REFERRAL COORDINATION
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Ambulance Service (NAS), Dr. George Kojo Owusu, alongside his management team, has paid a strategic courtesy call on the management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra to deepen collaboration and enhance referral coordination between the two critical institutions.
The high-level delegation from NAS included Deputy CEO- Dr. Patrick Inkoom-Colbelson, Deputy Director (PPME) Dr. Simon Nyaaba; Deputy Director, Public Relations, Mr. Simmons Yussif Kewura; Deputy Director, IT, Mr. Edmund Boateng; Deputy Director, Procurement, Alhaji Sanunu Seidu; Deputy Director, Operations, Dr. Ali Baba Awini; Director of Finance, Mr. Victor Coffie; the Greater Accra Regional Administrator and his deputy, DCAEMT Daniel Asare and DCAEMT Walter Foli, as well as members of the NAS Public Relations team.
The engagement focused on strengthening ties with receiving facilities and developing a more efficient communication and referral coordination system to ensure seamless patient transfers between both institutions.
Welcoming the NAS team, the CEO of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, described the visit as timely and highly necessary. He acknowledged the need for improved communication and coordination, particularly in light of a recent unfortunate loss of life. He emphasized that, considering the fact that lives are at stake, both institutions must act in good faith and work collaboratively to prevent such incidents in the future.
As part of long-term solutions, the NAS CEO revealed that new training courses are being developed to enhance capacity building within the Service. He also disclosed plans to consider the recruitment of Physician Assistants in the next employment cycle, as part of the EMT team, to strengthen pre-hospital clinical care. In response, Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam described the proposal as a superb idea and further suggested the inclusion of critical care nurses, noting that their expertise could be pivotal in improving patient outcomes.
Adding to the discussion, Dr. Harry Akoto, Deputy Director of Medical Affairs at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, indicated that certain measures- including upgraded triaging systems- have already been implemented, with additional reforms ongoing behind the scenes. He stressed the importance of building a system that works efficiently for both institutions, ensuring that emergency care delivery is coordinated, responsive, and patient-centered.
Both CEOs agreed on the need for continued engagement at the highest level to address deeper systemic challenges. It was proposed that structured engagement schedules be developed, with designated contact persons from both institutions to drive practical, in-depth solutions.

At the heart of these discussions is one shared priority- safeguarding lives through strengthened systems, improved coordination, and professional excellence in emergency care delivery across Ghana.
