National Ambulance Service Partners with University of Ghana

In a significant step towards improving campus safety and emergency preparedness, the National Ambulance Service (NAS) is collaborating with the University of Ghana to train a dedicated team of Safety and Security Champions. This initiative is part of the University’s broader strategy to strengthen its internal capacity for preventing and responding to emergencies across its campuses.
The launch of the initiative took place at the University of Ghana Stadium Conference Room under the theme: “Building a Culture of Safety and Security Mindsets: The Role of the Champions.”
In her keynote address, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, emphasized that safety and security are foundational to academic excellence.
“At the heart of every academic institution is a sense of safety and security. Without it, creativity, learning, and administration are impeded. It is therefore essential to build systems that protect and support our academic environment,” she noted.
The National Ambulance Service, as a key partner, will lead the technical training of the Safety and Security Champions. The program will cover critical emergency response skills including First Aid, trauma management, and life-saving interventions. NAS personnel will also provide practical demonstrations to ensure participants are fully prepared to act effectively in times of crisis.
Speaking at the event, Acting Chief Executive Officer of NAS, Dr. George Kojo Owusu, commended the University for prioritizing safety: “Safety is everyone’s responsibility. By training Safety and Security Champions across your campus, you are investing in a culture of readiness, response, and resilience,” he stated.
He further encouraged participants to view the training as a call to leadership:
“As Champions, you will be first responders, advocates for safety, and the critical bridge between emergency services and the university community.”
This collaboration between NAS and the University of Ghana reflects a shared commitment to building safer institutions and equipping key personnel with the knowledge and skills needed to protect lives.New text element
