The National Ambulance Service (NAS) commends the professionalism and dedication of SEMT Daniel Marfo, a Senior Emergency Medical Technician (SEMT) stationed at Kpassa in the Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region, whose swift intervention saved lives following a serious road traffic collision.
On Monday, 16th February 2026, while travelling near Kechebi between Dambai and Nkwanta, SEMT Marfo encountered a head-on collision involving two motorbikes with multiple casualties. Although he was off duty and without medical equipment such as oxygen, suction devices, AED, or stretcher, he immediately took charge of the scene.
Upon assessment, one casualty was found pulseless with multiple injuries. SEMT Marfo promptly initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using his bare hands and successfully restored the patient’s pulse and consciousness. He further controlled bleeding, positioned victims appropriately, and directed bystanders to assist by placing casualties in recovery positions.
He coordinated transportation of the injured persons to the Kechebi CHPS Zone and subsequently to the Nkwanta South Municipal Hospital for advanced care.
Sadly, one victim later passed away on arrival. The incident highlights the critical importance of rapid emergency response and the availability of trained personnel at accident scenes.
This act once again demonstrates that EMTs are capable of delivering lifesaving care anytime and anywhere- even off duty and without equipment.
