The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced that the Government will procure 100 new ambulances for the National Ambulance Service (NAS) in 2027 as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s pre-hospital emergency healthcare system.
The announcement was made on Sunday, 16 August 2026, during the Ministry of Health’s High-Level Mid-Year Review Retreat held in Ho in the Volta Region. The retreat brought together board chairpersons and heads of agencies under the Ministry of Health, as well as directors and other senior management officials of the Ministry to review progress and discuss strategic priorities for improving healthcare delivery across the country.
Addressing participants, the Minister reaffirmed Government’s commitment to enhancing emergency medical services and revealed that the planned acquisition of 100 ambulances will significantly boost the operational capacity of the National Ambulance Service and improve access to emergency care nationwide.
In addition to the planned procurement, the Minister disclosed that the 30 ambulances recently retrieved from the Ghana Air Force Base at Burma Camp and handed over for refurbishment will also be integrated into the national ambulance fleet upon completion of the rehabilitation process.
The Minister further indicated that additional funding will be made available to support the repair and maintenance of existing ambulances to ensure that more vehicles remain roadworthy and available for emergency response operations across the country.
Recognising the critical role of policy and regulation in strengthening emergency medical services, the Minister called on all relevant stakeholders to expedite action on the Legal Instrument (LI) for the National Ambulance Service. According to him, the LI will provide the necessary regulatory framework to support the Service’s operations and long-term development.
The National Ambulance Service was represented at the retreat by its Board Chairman, Nana Baffour Kotei Kutin Sraman II, and the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. (Med) George Kojo Owusu.
The Ministry of Health’s High-Level Mid-Year Review Retreat served as an important platform for assessing sector performance, strengthening collaboration among agencies, and charting a course for improved healthcare delivery for all Ghanaians.
