Government to Procure 400 New Ambulances, 500 Motorbikes for National Ambulance Service- NAS CEO
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Ambulance Service (NAS), Dr. George Kojo Owusu, has announced that government is set to procure 400 new Toyota ambulances and 500 motorbikes to strengthen emergency medical response across the country.
According to the CEO, the acquisition forms part of efforts to retool and expand the operational capacity of the Service, particularly at a time when a significant number of existing ambulances are ageing and require replacement.
“The new ambulances will significantly boost our fleet capacity and enhance our ability to respond promptly to emergencies nationwide,” Dr. Owusu stated.
These ambulances are notably in various categories;
i. Basic Life Support (BLS) Ambulances
ii. Advance Life Support (ALS) Ambulances
iii. Critical Care Ambulances
iv. Pediatric Ambulances
v. Mobile Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Ambulances
The Service will also introduce the Rapid Response Unit, with 500 motorbikes. The motorbikes are expected to improve response times, especially in congested urban centres and hard-to-reach communities where conventional ambulances may face access challenges and also boot stabilisation of patients, and lead to improved survival outcomes.
The CEO made the disclosure during a press conference dubbed ‘The State of the National Ambulance Service’, held at the conference room of the NAS headquarters today.
The planned procurement is expected to mark a major milestone in the ongoing transformation of the National Ambulance Service and reinforce its mandate of providing timely and quality pre-hospital emergency care to the people of Ghana.
