As part of activities marking World EMS Week, the National Ambulance Service (NAS) has intensified efforts to promote emergency preparedness and public safety by organizing a comprehensive Basic Life Support (BLS) training session for staff of Blowchem Industries, producers of Bel Beverages.
World EMS Week is globally observed to celebrate the dedication, sacrifice, and lifesaving impact of Emergency Medical Services personnel while also promoting public awareness on the importance of timely emergency care. In line with this year’s theme, “Improving Outcomes Together,” NAS used the occasion to empower corporate staff with practical emergency response skills that can help save lives before professional help arrives.
The training, spearheaded by the NAS Public Relations Unit in collaboration with the Training Department, NAS Greater Accra Region, and a specialized team of paramedics, brought together about sixty (60) staff members at the Safety Department of Blowchem Industries in Tema.
The initiative forms part of NAS’s broader commitment to strengthening emergency care systems within workplaces and communities by equipping ordinary citizens with essential lifesaving knowledge and skills.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer of NAS, the Deputy Director of Public Relations, Mr. Simmons Yussif Kewura, urged participants to take the training seriously, emphasizing that emergencies can occur unexpectedly at the workplace, at home, or within communities.
He noted that many lives are often lost during medical emergencies due to delayed or inadequate first response interventions, stressing that this reality continues to drive NAS’s commitment to public education and emergency preparedness nationwide.
During the intensive practical session, participants received hands-on training in several critical emergency response techniques, including:
• Recovery Position – Properly positioning an unconscious but breathing person to maintain a clear airway.
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) – Learning the correct rhythm and depth of chest compressions to sustain blood circulation during cardiac arrest.
• Choking and Airway Management – Essential techniques for relieving airway obstruction and restoring breathing.
The session also provided participants with the opportunity to interact directly with NAS personnel and gain deeper appreciation for the advanced training and professionalism required in pre-hospital emergency care delivery.
